Carol Mestern qualified as a Speech Therapist and Audiologist from the University of Cape Town in 2001 and received her Master’s degree (with distinction) in Speech-Language Pathology in 2006. She has experience in treating both children and adults with a variety of difficulties.
She worked in hospitals (focusing on adults with acquired speech and language impairments); as well as at a school for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. She has been in full-time private practice, Carol Mestern Speech Therapy, since early 2013, based mainly in the Fish Hoek and Tokai areas.
Carol has a keen interest in early intervention, hearing impairment, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down’s syndrome, apraxia, auditory processing and acquired neurological disorders. She accomplished a Post Graduate Diploma in “Listening and Spoken Language” from the University of Stellenbosch (2013). She has also completed an intensive autism training workshop at Vera School, Makaton (Enhancement level), “Bridges in Social Understanding” (an online curriculum for social understanding and social skills) and the Hanen: “It Takes Two to Talk” certification.
Carol Mestern is a member of the South African Speech Language and Hearing Association and the South African Cochlear Implant Group.
Helen Terblanche qualified as a speech, language and hearing therapist from the University of Stellenbosch in 2016. She is fully bilingual in English and Afrikaans. Helen has worked as a community service officer at a District Hospital and an outpatient Assessment and Therapy Centre, seeing both adults and children.
She has a particular interests in: Autism Spectrum Disorder, stuttering, paediatric speech and language disorders and acquired neurological disorders.
Helen has completed the Autism Western Cape Autism Cares training, Makaton (beginners) and "Bridges in Social Understanding" (an online curriculum for social understanding and social skills) as well as courses in ‘Tracheoesophageal voice restoration post laryngectomy’ and ‘The role of the speech-language therapist in the assessment and management of patients with burn injuries’.
She is passionate about making a difference by improving patients’ quality of life with a holistic approach to treatment and has a love for working with both children and adults. Helen is a member of the South African Speech and Language Association. She is based in Fish Hoek but is also able to provide home, school and hospital visits in the surrounding areas.
